Bringing your family to Canada starts with getting the application right

Few things matter more than being together with the people you love. Canada’s family sponsorship programs exist for exactly that reason — but the process is documentation-heavy, slow, and unforgiving of mistakes. A single missing form or an incomplete proof of relationship can set an application back by months.

To sponsor a family member, you must generally be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, at least 18 years old, and living in Canada. You must also sign an undertaking — a legally binding commitment to financially support the person you sponsor for a set period after they arrive.

Understanding what you are agreeing to, and whether you qualify, is the first step. It is far easier to address a problem before filing than to appeal a refusal afterward.

Who Can Be Sponsored

Spouses, partners, dependent children, parents and grandparents, and in limited cases other relatives.

The Undertaking

A binding financial commitment lasting three to twenty years depending on the relationship.

Every sponsorship application is really two applications working together: your application to sponsor, and your family member’s application for permanent residence. Both must succeed. Our immigration team can help you prepare both sides of the file, so a problem in one does not undermine the other.

  • Prove the relationship is genuine, not entered into for immigration purposes

  • Meet income requirements where the program applies

  • Ensure the applicant is not inadmissible on medical, criminal or security grounds

When applications are refused

Refusals happen, and often for reasons the sponsor did not anticipate. Officers may find the relationship was not sufficiently established, that documents were inconsistent, or that the applicant is inadmissible. Sometimes the refusal stems from a misunderstanding rather than a genuine problem with the case.

In many situations you have the right to appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division. Deadlines are short and strictly enforced, so acting quickly matters. At Bowie Law, we assist clients with sponsorship applications from the outset, and we also represent clients at appeals and hearings when an application has already been refused.

Processing Times

Vary significantly by program and country. Plan for months, not weeks.

Changes During Processing

A move, a job change or a new child must be reported. Silence causes problems.

Family sponsorship is one of the most meaningful things a person can do — and one of the most stressful to wait through. Careful preparation at the beginning is the best protection against delay and refusal. If you are planning to sponsor a family member, or if your application has been refused, contact Bowie Law for a free consultation.
